Tiltage

Been making a back up video in case there is any problems with the Vive installation. Some short snippets below.

Note to Self:

  • Nice atmospheric immersive quality to these snippets that gets lost when exported.
  • Tech not there yet these export these Tilt Brush video captures and then import into unity as 360 immersive sequences.
  • Was going to import the video and embed on a few walls in Unity but security bug with QT on pc, so decided to leave it alone and use still images instead, might have been too busy anyway.

Gravel RoomScale

I wanted to originally get matting or floor sheeting printed with imagery from the VR piece but it became increasingly costly and impractical. So I decided to go with gravel instead. I won’t have to transport it to London, I can get x2 bags of stones/gravel on the other side.

The problem is that maybe an uneven floor space would not work with the HTC Vive’s base stations. I have done an experiment this morning and it seems to work fine, fingers crossed.

I placed a few 3D prints on the gravel and this seemed to disrupt the sensors, so will have to work out a way to display them outside the sensor range.

Also I like the idea that the person immersed will know by the crunch underneath not to move off the gravel.

Note to Self:

  • Gravel is usually wet/moist when in a 25kg builders bag, so it has to be dried out on newspaper for about 24 hours.

Virtual kingdoms

Welcome to the virtual kingdom, curious to see what I will encounter in this realm of melancholic assets and disobeying objects.

Animations imported into Unity.

New materials wrapped around the 3D objects.

Shadows and lighting, see what needs attention.

Disobeying objects can get quite bolshy.

Spinning objects approaching through the trees. Run.

Note to Self:

  • Have to edit so listener audio is less over-powering.
  • Have to make list as to which object is paired with which audio when triggered.
  • By combining Unity assets with imported objects the overall aesthetic is quite ‘gamer’ looking visually, but It is the look/feel I want for this piece.

Tilting

I finally got my hands on a decent HMD, I got to borrow a HTC Vive with x2 controllers and x2 base stations off a video editor colleague. A shame I didn’t get my hands on it a few months back but, c’est la vie.

I installed Steam and SteamVR, bought the Tilt Brush app and have been painting and sculpting in the void the last few days.

There are a lot of cheesy brushes in Tilt Brush, but there a handful of really nice ones, so the potential is huge.

Note to Self:

  • You can also export any 3D object created in Tilt brush as an .fbx for use in Unity. It seems to strip off any materials though.
  • You can also import 3D objects but seems to be one at a time only.
  • The novelty of ‘light sculpting’ soon wears off, but a great tool as it continues to evolve.

Reversed across the ages

A quick 3D study for a future project.

V-1 wooden rocket as an inverted type of Cargo Cult, DIY Fetish object, made with ‘driftwood’ from skips or the street.

Waiting to summon the rockets from the skys/void. The message has bounced back through the decades and hopes to soften the landings.

or an Arctic version.

Instead of driftwood DIY, polar bear fur. Fake fur from a charity shop.

Note to Self:
