Tiltage

Been making a back up video in case there is any problems with the Vive installation. Some short snippets below.

Note to Self:

  • Nice atmospheric immersive quality to these snippets that gets lost when exported.
  • Tech not there yet these export these Tilt Brush video captures and then import into unity as 360 immersive sequences.
  • Was going to import the video and embed on a few walls in Unity but security bug with QT on pc, so decided to leave it alone and use still images instead, might have been too busy anyway.

Virtual kingdoms

Welcome to the virtual kingdom, curious to see what I will encounter in this realm of melancholic assets and disobeying objects.

Animations imported into Unity.

New materials wrapped around the 3D objects.

Shadows and lighting, see what needs attention.

Disobeying objects can get quite bolshy.

Spinning objects approaching through the trees. Run.

Note to Self:

  • Have to edit so listener audio is less over-powering.
  • Have to make list as to which object is paired with which audio when triggered.
  • By combining Unity assets with imported objects the overall aesthetic is quite ‘gamer’ looking visually, but It is the look/feel I want for this piece.

Wunderwaffe

peenemunde-1

“Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation.” – Wernher Von Braun.

peenemunde-2

A combination of re-reading Thomas Pynchon’s ‘Gravity’s Rainbow, cargo cults and Platonic solids conspired against me to wash me up on the online shore of an Airfix kit page dedicated to secret WW2 aircraft, most notably the Horten Brothers, two WW2 era aviation inventors who pioneered the Horten 229 aka ‘the Flying Wing’.

peenemunde-4

I have always been fascinated by the scientific leaps made in 1944-45 as the Nazi’s desperately tired to develop ‘Wunderwaffe’ or wonder weapons such as the V1 and V2 rockets to turn the tide of WW2. A recent BBC piece on the Horten 229.

peenemunde-3

With current world events mirroring the 1930’s, and another extreme narcissist having just assumed power, I look at these ‘Wunderwaffe’ as a foreboding echo from history.

peenemunde-5

“Causality does not take place ‘in’ a space that has been established already. Instead it radiates from objects…”. Timothy Morton: ‘Realist Magic objects, Ontology, Causality’.

Note to Self:

  • OOO: Even when they are isolated from all external influences, objects seem to breathe with a strange life…

Not Still Life

More 3D scan imagery I wanted to still play with, and then put to rest.

sod-off-1

I imported an .stl file into Blender and then wrapped a texture of itself around itself. A kind of double self portrait of itself, an object/thing.

sod-off-3

Then I animated it to rotate, then imported it into Final Cut Pro X, and added some sound I had earlier put through a Kaoss pad. Basic, but going in the direction/aesthetic I want to take everything.

sod-off-4

This is a continuation of my interest in the textures that make up the 3D object. I find some of the .obj and .stl files quite beautiful.

Note to Self:

  • This is I suppose is an exercise in Autumnal cleaning (if there is such a thing) and tying up loose ends from last year. Some of these scans were meant to be 3D printed for the interim show but there were too many errors in the files. Would have been nice to have had a physical manifestation of some of the 3D objects in the video, but had to settle for a print instead.
  • Conceptually it may not seem as if there is much going on here, but everything I am doing now is leaning towards OOO.
  • Organic source material. i.e. scan of a sod of clay gives way to a digital version.

Hyper Objects

Still in the midst of writing my research paper, I am buried in references, links and books. One of the case studies in the paper is a virtual sculpture called ‘Hyperskins’ by American video maker and artist Andrew Thomas Huang.

hyper-objects-1

Hyperskins exhibits three digital sculptures cycling in an infinite loop through multiple surfaces, textural incarnations inspired by the philosophy of “hyper objects” by Timothy Morton – the idea that today’s objects lack a “discreteness” and instead are pervasive, multidimensional and ever-changing throughout phases of time, space and relative orientation to other objects independent of human consciousness.”

hyper-objects-3

Timothy Morton is a member of the ‘Object-orientated ontology (OOO)’ movement, and the term ‘Hyper Objects’ is explained below;

“Morton uses the term to explain objects so massively distributed in time and space as to transcend localization, such as climate change and styrofoam.”

hyper-objects-4

I fired off a message to Andrew Huang, and to my suprise he very graciously answered with a quite lengthy enlightening explanation about his piece, the book, inspiration and such subjects touched upon were The Antropocene, virtual relics, cloud data, photogrammetry and the 3D scanning of the beaver skull that sits on his mantlepiece amongst other things. I hope to use some of Andrew’s reply in my conclusion of the paper.
